ALPHA HYDROXY ACIDS

What are alpha hydroxy acids?

Alpha hydroxy acids are naturally occurring acids in certain plants and fruits including sugar cane, apples, grapes and citrus fruit.

How do alpha hydroxy acids work?

Alpha hydroxy acids work by ungluing dead cells on the surface of your skin and inside your pores so they can slough off more easily.

How does this affect my skin?

By decreasing the thickness of dead cells on the surface, you can expose a new layer of skin which has a smoother texture and more uniform color. Recent studies have shown that continued use of alpha hydroxy acids may cause the top layer of living cells to plump up, creating a more youthful appearance.

What type of skin benefits most from alpha hydroxy use?

Dry, sun damaged skin with blotchy pigmentation or fine wrinkles benefits most, as well as skin prone to acne.

How do I use alpha hydroxy acids?

There are many products containing alpha hydroxy acids including cleansers, creams, lotions and gels. Dr. Klein can help you select the appropriate type and strength for your needs.

Will alpha hydroxy acids make my skin sun sensitive or irritated?

No. Unlike Retin-A or Renova, alpha hydroxy acids rarely cause sensitivity to sunlight, flakiness, redness or irritation.

Can alpha hydroxy acids help remove brown spots on my skin?

Alpha hydroxy acids when combined with lightening agents such as hydroquinone and/or kojic acid are extremely effective at removing brown discolorations.

How long will it be before I notice a change in my skin?

If you are like most people, you will begin to feel a softening of your skin within two to three weeks. It may take several additional months, however, to achieve your best results.
