Anti-Aging Advancements

OC Health Interviews an Expert Behind Dermatology
Lorrie Klein, M.D.

How have dermatology and anti-aging treatments advanced in the last few years?

The whole concept of anti-aging has changed over the last 5-10 years. We used to utilize mostly surgery in our attempt to make people look younger. Unfortunately, a tighter face often does not produce natural looking, youthful results, because pulling the skin does not address what is actually happening in the face during the aging process.

With the advances in laser medicine, the development of new and better wrinkle fillers (such as Juvederm®, Artefill® and Radiesse®), and the advancing uses for BOTOX Cosmetic ®, dermatology and cosmetic

medicine in general have had a paradigm shift in how we approach anti-aging.

Our broadened understanding of the many facial aging processes has helped us use more specific treatments. Our Liquid Face Lift, for example, uses BOTOX to smooth out wrinkles, and various fillers to fill lines and plump depressions caused by the facial fat loss that accompanies aging. Flat, depressed cheeks is one of the most gradual, yet noticeable signs of aging, which is rarely addressed. Some of the most incredible, natural looking anti-aging improvement I see comes from plumping cheeks with Radiesse.

How have non-invasive procedures affected the anti-aging and dermatology fields?

Dermatology has always been on the forefront of non-surgical and minimally invasive procedures, such as lasers and injectable treatments. There has been exponential growth in the field of cosmetic dermatology, and staying at the forefront of these advances has amplified my practice. 10 years ago, I was only 10 percent cosmetic; now we are 50-60 percent cosmetic. I had two lasers 10 years ago, and I now have 10 lasers and looking to add more.

Before I only had collagen injections; now I have Botox, Juvederm, Radiesse, Restylane, Artefill and others!

Combining Botox and fillers often makes people look 10 years younger, without downtime or surgery. My slogan is: You can look 10 years younger, in 10 minutes or less for under $10 per day. (Each Botox or filler procedure can take less OC OC Health interviews an expert behind Dermatology, Lorrie Klein, M.D. Education passions achievements beauty profession ant i - aging advancements than 10 minutes, and most people spend less than $2000-$3000 per year to maintain their results.)

What is currently in the works in anti-aging dermatology?

More and better lasers, both for anti-aging and bodycontouring, and many more cosmetic fillers. We’re still waiting for a laser that works well on cellulite. When a great one comes out, I’m buying two!

About Dr. Klein

What attracted you to specialize in dermatology?

I always wanted to be an artist, yet I also excelled in academics, especially math and science. Because dermatology is a very visual field (you see the problem with your eyes and you see the results after your treatment), it allows me to use both the left (analytical, logical) and right (artistic, intuitive) sides of my brain.

What do you feel differentiates your practice and your work?

I utilize my artistic “eye” to help people both surgically - removing skin cancers and reconstructing the skin - and cosmetically. When I look at someone’s face, I instinctively see things that others overlook. For example, I can immediately see asymmetry in eyebrows or lips. Symmetry has its own beauty, and making someone look more symmetrical automatically enhances their appearance. Another skill that I attribute to my artistic eye is seeing the topography and shape of someone’s face. I instinctively know where and how to change it to make patients look younger. I evaluate as I work and know when it’s right. I call it an “eye for balance.” I am blessed for both having this innate gift, and for finding a career in which I can make wonderful use of it. I see each face as a new canvas to perfect.

How do you stay passionate and inspired about your work?

I enjoy people, and I love making them feel good about themselves. Having patients who look forward to seeing me and who are excited and happy about their results is very rewarding to me. The best compliment I can receive is when a patient returns after a cosmetic treatment, raving that they received lots of compliments, but no one could figure out what they did to look so good. I am blessed with two wonderful sons, Josh (16 years old) and Alex (13 years old), and the best husband I could ever ask for, Frank. Between them and my career (which doesn’t feel like work since I love it so much), I feel like the luckiest woman in the world!

What do you do in your free time?

When I am not working at my office I am often busy with my day spa, med spa and family. My husband Frank and I founded Euro Day Spa, Inc.in 1999. Our two locations plus taking care of our sons Josh and Alex keep me very busy!

What is your personal fitness regimen?

My husband and I walk with our labradoodle, Domino, 10-15 miles per week. I also do reformer Pilates twice a week. I used to practice martial arts, and I have a first-degree black belt in Taekwondo.
