Artefill FAQ

Dr. Lorrie Klein

Artefill contains tiny PMMA (poly-methyl-methacrylate) microspheres in a purified bovine collagen gel with an anesthetic for comfort during injection. The collagen acts as a carrier for the PMMA and dissolves over several months, leaving the microspheres in your skin. These microspheres provide the permanent support your skin needs for enduring wrinkle correction. PMMA is one of the most widely used synthetic implant materials in medicine.

While JUVEDERM™ and Restylane are still the fillers of choice for lips and fine lines and Radiesse is often the best choice for sculpting and plumping cheeks, Artefill is the treatment of choice for smile lines (the lines between the nose and corners of the mouth) when permanent correction is desired. Artefill can also be used to plump up marionette lines (the lines and depressions below the mouth), fill in scars and smooth out depressions and crooked contours on noses (the “LunchTime Nose Job”). Artefill is also often used in combination with Restylane, JUVEDERM™, Radiesse, BOTOX® and laser rejuvenation treatments, such as Fraxel Laser Treatment, IPL and V-Beam Laser for comprehensive, no downtime rejuvenation.

Treatments typically last 10-20 minutes and are usually painless. Depending on the areas treated, more than one syringe may be needed to create the best look possible. Enhancements are recommended 1-3 months after your treatment to “fine-tune” your results. These may often require only the smaller 0.4 cc syringe.

Preparation for your treatment:

  • You must be skin tested 4 weeks or longer before your treatment to screen for allergy to bovine collagen.
  • We recommend waiting at least 6 months after you have had a temporary filler placed in the same area.
  • To reduce discomfort with this treatment, we highly recommend you apply our anesthetic ointment 60 minutes before your treatment. Apply it in a very thick layer (like icing on a cake.) This ointment is available at our office or you can arrive one hour before your appointment and apply your ointment here in the office.
  • To reduce the risk of bruising, we recommend you avoid aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil), vitamin E and similar medications for 1-2 weeks before your treatment. We recommend you take Arnica Montana, a natural oral medication (a high-potency version of this is available in our office) the day of your treatment and continue for several days after your treatment. This medication helps reduce bruising and swelling.

What to expect after your treatment: After injection, some common, temporary, injection-related reactions might occur: tenderness, redness, itching, bruising, bumps, pain or swelling. If any of these occur, they typically resolve within a few days. We recommend planning your treatments at least one week before any special events. Rare potential side effects of all dermal fillers may be lumps, abscesses and granulomas, which are usually treatable.

Aftercare: No special care is needed after treatment, however we advise you not to massage the area on the day of your treatment, as this may displace the gel. Exaggerated facial expression during the first 24 hours may also displace the gel, so avoid prolonged laughing, playing musical instruments with your mouth and sleeping on your face. Apply cold packs for 10-15 minutes every 1-2 hours until bedtime on the day of your treatment to reduce swelling & bruising.

Cost: 0.8 cc syringe - $1500 ($1400 each for additional syringes†)
0.4 cc syringe - $ 900 ($ 800 each for additional syringes†) (Usually used only for small areas and enhancements)

†After a full size, 0.8cc syringe is purchased; a discount of $100 will apply per syringe for all additional syringes needed on the day of your initial treatment or within 6 months after initial treatment. Prices subject to change without notice.

*Studies indicate Artefill lasts at least 5 years and is probably permanent. If you do not desire a permanent implant, JUVEDERM™, Radiesse or Restylane may be preferable. If you have never used a cosmetic filler, we recommend trying one of these temporary fillers first before having a permanent filler. Artefill is not recommended for certain people.
