What does vitamin C do?

Vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant, has the ability to neutralize or counteract damage to cells caused by free radicals which are believed to be a main cause of aging.

How does topical vitamin C work?

Increasingly, research has shown that adding topical vitamin C to skin can stimulate the production of collagen, a protein which helps form the skin’s supporting structure. Normally as we age, collagen degenerates, and as a result, our skin wrinkles. Collagen plumps up the skin creating a smoother surface with fewer lines and wrinkles.

Can I get the same results from taking vitamin C internally?

No. Although vitamin C stimulates collagen production in the skin, it is very difficult to get high enough concentrations when taken internally. Vitamin C has to be delivered onto and absorbed into the skin in order to be effective.

How long do I need to use topical vitamin C?

No one knows how long the positive results of topical vitamin C persist after discontinuing its use. Since aging is an ongoing process, presumably any therapeutic treatment must be continued long-term.

Does topical vitamin C have any negative side effects?

Topical vitamin C is very well tolerated by most people’s skin. On rare occasions some mild dryness or flaking may be noted, but this is easily treated with a moisturizer.

Do I need to protect my skin while using vitamin C?

Topical vitamin C doesn’t sensitize the skin to sunlight. Actually, there is some evidence that topical vitamin C has a protective effect against sun damage. Even so, since most aging is caused by the cumulative effects of sun exposure, we recommend you apply a sunscreen daily with a protection factor of at least 15.

How do I use vitamin C?

A small amount of vitamin C should be applied to the face in the morning and at night before going to bed.

How soon will I notice a change in my skin?

This varies with each individual. Some may see changes as soon as two to four weeks while others may take as long as six to eight weeks. A maximum effect will occur at about six months.
